What is Nuun?
Nuun is a portable sports drink mix that contains the necessary electrolytes to keep you properly hydrated without all the sugars like most sports drinks. It's used by cyclists, triathletes, runners, hikers, yoga bods, just about anyone who's active and wants to stay properly hydrated. Drop a Nuun in a bottle of water and you're good to go.
Where can I find Nuun?

Will Nuun eliminate cramps?
Not only are cramps painful enough to stop you in your tracks, they're also completely involuntary. Good news is, yes, Nuun can help alleviate cramps by keeping you hydrated better than water alone. Each sip gives you a consistent mix of water and electrolytes to ensure you stay properly hydrated and cramp-free.
What's in Nuun?
- Four essential electrolytes: sodium potassium, magnesium and calcium.
- A nice light refreshing flavor that's not over powering when you're on the go.
- A bit of fizzy stuff to ensure it dissolves quickly without having to mix or shake, which disappears once the Nuun tab is completely dissolved.
- A smidgen of color in the form of riboflavin (vitamin B2) & beet juice depending on the flavor.
- And of course a dash of love.
- The following is the nutritional information for a serving of Nuun based on one tablet dissolved in 16oz (500ml) of water. There are under 8 calories per Nuun tab.
What's not in Nuun?
No sugar, because they didn't want to upset stomachs or overwhelm taste buds, and they did want to give you more control over your calorie intake. No artificial colors because neon green isn't necessary for proper hydration.
Why no carbs?
In our opinion, a one size fits all mentality doesn't work in active lives. They thought it was better to focus on keeping you hydrated and let you decide where your carbs come from. Whether it's gels, bars or other nutrition sources, you choose what's best for you.
What flavors does Nuun come in?
Lemon Lime, Tri-Berry, Citrus Fruit, Orange, Fruit Punch, Grape, Strawberry Lemonade, Tropical. There's a flavor just right for all different kinds of taste buds.
What flavors does U Natural Hydration come in?
Lemon Chai, Cucumber Mint, Tangerine Ginger and Goji Berry Green Tea.
Can I mix Nuun with other drinks?
Nuun is designed with a balanced ratio of water to electrolytes for optimal hydration. If you find mixing Nuun with other hydration products works for you, fantastic. They're all about helping people get the best hydration for their needs.
How many servings are in Nuun?
The sturdy lightweight tube is good for 1.5 gallons of electrolyte hydration. There are 12 Nuun tabs per tube. Each Nuun tab makes 16ozs and can easily be broken in half for 8oz mixes.
Is Nuun gluten-free?
Yes, both Nuun and U Natural Hydration are gluten-free so it's safe for those with celiac disease or gluten intolerance. Drink up, friends.
Is Nuun vegetarian?
Nuun and U Natural Hydration contain no animal derived raw materials. They are enjoyed by vegetarians, omnivores and carnivores alike.
Does Nuun contain corn?
Nuun and U Hydration have no corn in them, but as some of the ingredients are processed from corn as starting material, they cannot guarantee it is 'corn free' for those of you with corn allergies.
What are electrolytes?
As you might guess from their name, electrolytes are electrically charged, which means that they can conduct electrical impulses. The body needs electrical impulses to make muscle cells contract. The foods we eat and fluids we drink contain mineral salts, which form electrolytes when they dissolve in the fluids in our bodies.
The body has to perform a delicate balancing act to keep water and electrolyte levels just right. For example, whenever sodium levels dip too low, the kidneys are stimulated to produce more urine, which restores the balance by lowering the amount of water in the blood. And when the sodium level gets too high, thirst develops, stimulating the person to drink. A hormone is also secreted by the brain in response to thirst that causes the kidneys to produce less urine. Together, these effects result in dilution of the sodium and the restoration of balance.
Is Nuun carbonated?
A burping athlete is not a good thing, so no, Nuun is not carbonated. When first dropped into water Nuun fizzes to dissolve, but once it's finished dissolving it will very quickly become still.
Can I eat Nuun?
Nuun was designed to be mixed with water, but they've heard of some people eating it anyways. Whether as an experiment or to get your electrolytes in a hurry, it isn't the most pleasant experience, but it won't hurt you.
How many calories are in a Nuun?
Nuun is sugar free, so it's nearly calorie free, but there are a couple calories from the stuff that makes it fizz and dissolve. When you add them up it comes out to less than 8 calories per 16oz drink.
Sure, Nuun's great for hydrating and it's a great way to get kids to drink more water (instead of sugary sodas!).
What about Nuun for a hangover?
They all like to party from time to time. Thier office is located above a pub after all. Too much celebrating can lead to dehydration, and since Nuun hydrates more quickly than water alone, you might find us drinking Nuun after our post-race celebrations. Take two Nuuns and call us in the morning.
Can I recycle my Nuun Tube?
Absolutely! The tubes can be recycled at any facility that processes #5 plastics. (find a location) Every tube of Nuun keeps twelve water or traditional sports drinks plastic bottles from being used. A lot of Nuun users have even put their old tubes to some pretty ingenious uses. Unfortunately, the waterproof stoppers aren't yet recyclable, but they're working on ways to make them 100% recyclable and still portable, sturdy and waterproof.
Is Nuun legal to race with?
Many are surprised with their increased performance when drinking Nuun, but no worries, Nuun is totally legal. The only thing Nuun is laced with is sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium.
I've seen the Nuun logo on pro athletes - do they actually use it?
Yes, they're happy to sponsor some fantastic pros who believe in Nuun. A few even claim Nuun as their "secret weapon." Heck, there are even some talented pros out there who use Nuun even though they display other logos. Now that's pretty impressive. Ask around, you'll be surprised.
Nuun's hypotonic - what does that mean?
A hypotonic solution has a salt concentration that causes water flows into the cells by osmosis. That's straight from the dictionary, so it's gotta be true. But in plain English it basically means, a hypotonic solution is the quickest, most efficient way to get water back into your system for optimal hydration.
Can Nuun help prevent hyponatremia?
Absolutely. They're a bunch of seasoned athletes who've been working to combat hyponatremia for years. Hyponatremia occurs when there's not enough sodium in your blood stream. If you lose electrolytes (usually through sweating), but are trying to replace them with plain water, you can be at serious risk. Nuun is designed to deliver the perfect balance of electrolytes and water to give you optimal hydration.
Am I dehydrated?
Probably! Experts estimate that only 10% of people are properly hydrated. Since you're here, you must be one of the smart ones trying to join the ranks of the hydrated-or you're already there. Signs of dehydration are thirst, irritability, fatigue, headache, cramps and in extreme cases death. Drink Nuun before you have the symptoms!
I'm an incredible athlete - will Nuun sponsor me?
At Nuun they love to support lots of different people who do lots of different things and our Ambassador Program offers definite perks. Right now, they are focused on ambassadors in the USA who are active in social media outlets like Facebook and Twitter. If you have your own website or blog, even better! If you think what you have going on deserves a second look, let us know using our Ambassador Request Form and they will get back to you shortly.
What does "Nuun" mean and where did the name come from?
Nuun, pronounced "Noon," has generated a lot of rumors and myths of origin. It's been believed to be everything from the name our founder's dog to an unexplored island in the Pacific-or even a place in the Legend of Zelda! They enjoy hearing the rumors, so for the time being, they're going to keep the mystery alive.
Can somebody with high blood pressure use Nuun safely while working out?
Only after checking with a doctor. Some blood pressure conditions are unique and medications can also be an issue. Always check with your doctor before taking something that might affect a health issue, or before undertaking a new exercise program.
What if my pets or kids have eaten the stuff inside the Nuun stopper?
They'll be fine. Due to our manufacturing practices the stuff in the caps can be either silica gel or bentonite clay, both of which are not dangerous. The worst case would be a stomach ach, constipation, and possibly a tingly feeling on the tongue. Just make sure you drink lots of water. If you are still concerned, here is some more info.
- Silica Gel
It's nothing more than a type of sand. The grains of what looks like clear caviar in the tiny packets are a desiccant. That is, they absorb moisture. You find them in the little white packets in certain food products that will have a longer shelf life if they stay dry; like pepperoni, dried nuts and fruits, or vitamins. So why do the packets include warnings with a skull and crossbones? The packets are "harmful if swallowed" by an infant or pet, as they could choke or aspirate on the packet. However, the grains are loose inside our caps and not inside a packet that could pose a choking hazard.
The little grey grains are rendered from bentonite clay, which is a naturally occurring. Sodium bentonite powder absorbs moisture and is often used in manufacturing like ours as an alternative to silica gel. Bentonite is actually sold in health food stores as a dietary supplement. Because of the substance's bonding properties and smooth consistency, it is added to antidiarrheal preparations, and foods including yogurt, baby milk powders, toothpaste, and pet foods.
Hydration Frequently Asked Questions
The first thing everyone says is, "Check the pee!" As a rule, a large amount of light colored, diluted urine probably means you are hydrated; dark colored, concentrated urine probably means you are dehydrated. While this test can be a very good general indicator, there is often more to the puzzle. Just because your urine is clear and you get rid of a lot of it doesn't necessarily mean you are optimally hydrated. Clear urine is water that is NOT being absorbed by your body.
Nuun's special formulation of electrolytes helps increase the amount of water that's absorbed into the blood stream. And that means more of the water you drink is actually used to hydrate you instead of being eliminated because the electrolyte balance wasn't right. Don't get us wrong, good hydration doesn't mean no more urine. If you drink a gallon of Nuun a lot of that is going to come right back out… however, your body is going to get plenty of good, balanced fluids first!
Why is Hydration important?
Your mind and body will work better when hydrated! We all know hydration is important for athletic performance, but what about daily life, health and fitness? Whether you are running a marathon, or running a middle school soccer carpool, keeping your body hydrated is key for concentration and attention to detail. Hydration can boost your life performance!
Why does dehydration happen?
Dehydration happens for lots of reasons. Most people don't recognize that and only drink when they feel thirsty. The most common causes of dehydration are simply not drinking enough regularly and not drinking enough during or after activity. By the time you feel thirsty you are already dehydrated and are probably being affected in more ways than you realize. Training or participating in activities at altitude or in extreme weather conditions increases your fluid losses and therefore your fluid needs. Optimal hydration is key to health and high performance.
How Nuun helps?
One Up Your Water with Nuun, an electrolyte enhanced drink tablet formulated to dissolve in water and designed to keep you optimally hydrated wherever you are. Nuun's special formulation of electrolytes helps increase the amount of water that's absorbed into the blood stream. That means more of the water you drink is actually used to hydrate you instead of being eliminated because the electrolyte balance wasn't right. Nuun is not energy. We designed Nuun just for hydration. It's what we do best!
Why does dehydration happen?
Dehydration happens for lots of reasons. You're often dehydrated in the morning when you wake up simply from sleeping for hours (hopefully lots of them!) without fluids. The processes in your body are working hard while you sleep, and even just breathing results in water loss from your body. But the most common causes of dehydration are simply not drinking enough regularly and not drinking enough during or after activity to replace what's been lost. Most of the time people don't recognize the signs of dehydration and only drink when they feel thirsty. By the time you feel thirsty you are already dehydrated and are probably being affected in more ways than you realize.
How do I figure out my personal hydration needs?
No two people are the same, so figuring out your sweat rate is the most accurate way to figure out your personal hydration needs. And weighing yourself before and after exercise is the most effective way to gauge your fluid needs. Any weight loss corresponds with fluid loss, so try to drink enough to replenish that weight. (Weight gain could mean you are drinking more than you need.)
Studies have found that a loss of 2% or more of one's body weight due to sweating is linked to a drop in blood volume. When this occurs, the heart works harder to move blood through the bloodstream. This can also cause muscle cramps, dizziness and fatigue and even heat exhaustion or heatstroke. For all the athletes out there, it can mean a major drop in performance, and for the rest of us, it makes for a really uncomfortable day.
What should I know about fluid loss?
Although sweat rate is the most basic and accurate way to keep tabs on your hydration needs, there are other factors to consider. Training or participating in activities at altitude increases your fluid losses and therefore increases your fluid needs. Excessive heat increases fluid loss through sweating. During moderate exercise in a cool climate an average person can loose up to 1 cup or more per hour. The same individual can loose up to four times that amount per hour in a hot and humid climate. And cold weather exercise can impair your ability to recognize fluid depletion and increase the rate of fluid-loss through respiration. So no matter what kind of weather you're in, optimal hydration is your key to health and high-performance.
Hyponatremia - What is it?
We've all heard that drinking more water is good for your health, but an increasing number of hyponatremia cases shows us that drinking water isn't always enough-especially when it's being consumed in large quantities over short periods of time.
Hyponatremia is the scientific term for low concentration of sodium in the blood, and it can occur from over-hydrating with plain water. Drinking excess amounts of water, especially during extended exercise or activity, can deplete essential electrolytes in the body, causing disorientation, illness and in rare cases death. For athletes, effects are generally seen during longer and hotter races when they're sweating a lot and the levels of water intake are likely to be high.
How does hyponatremia occur?
When salt leaves the body through sweat and lots of plain water gets taken in, the bloodstream becomes diluted and sodium and potassium levels drop. But sodium is essential for optimal cell function. It helps with the electrical signals that occur in our bodies, and it helps regulate cellular osmotic pressure through osmosis. (Remember that school experiment with the bag-like thing and the salty water?) When hyponatremia occurs, cells throughout the body take on more water than normal and expand. Rings and watches will get tight, you'll look all puffy and, the bad bit, your brain swells. Since your brain is in a rather inflexible skull, it gets a bit squished and that's where the disorientation-and in worse case scenarios, fatalities-come from.
When does it happen?
We've received a lot of letters and emails from folks who have suffered from some degree of hyponatremia. Often the common link is that they were preparing for a tough event in a harsh environment, like a ride in a desert or a long run in a canyon. But you can get hyponatremia anywhere when you're sweating profusely and you're consuming a large quantity of water without electrolytes. A good electrolyte drink will go a long way in helping to prevent hyponatremia. This has been well documented by medical journals. Nancy Auer, MD, VP of Medical Affairs at Swedish Medical Center in Seattle, says, "Maybe we need to make sure there is more sodium in the beverages we're encouraging athletes to drink." It's time to rethink the conventional wisdom behind the water stations at athletic events and make sure we're properly hydrating athletes to prevent hyponatremia.
What can you do to avoid hyponatremia?
Our advice? Be sensible. You need to be aware of the potential problems associated with drinking a lot of water while being active for extended lengths of time. It's important to replenish your body's electrolytes at the same time. Naturally we recommend using Nuun. With just one tab and 16 ounces of water, you get a sugar free sports drink with the optimal balance of electrolytes. But whatever you decide is best for you, Nuun encourages you to stay properly hydrated.
