Are Vanicream's products non-comedogenic?
They have tested products in Vanicream's line that are considered "leave on" products such as the Vanicream Skin Cream, and all of the Vanicream Sunscreens. Vanicream has even tested the Vanicream Cleansing Bar. They are all non-comedogenic. "Rinse off" products such as the shampoo do not pose a risk of comedogenicity and therefore have not been tested.
Do Vanicream's products contain nut ingredients?
No, they do not use ingredients known to be made from common nut sources (e.g., peanuts and tree nuts such as almonds, cashews, or walnuts). Some shampoo or cleanser ingredients may be made from coconuts. However, coconuts are not actually nuts; they are seeds.
The primary purpose of Pharmaceutical Specialties Inc., the makers of Vanicream, is to make products for people with sensitive skin. They know from the responses of both physicians who recommend their products, and patients that use them, that they have achieved considerable success toward this goal. None-the-less, they know that they will probably never be able to help every person with sensitive skin.
You can be assured that PSI goes to great lengths to select ingredients that are safe and effective, are suitable for customers, and then they continuously test and monitor them for quality. Likewise, their finished products undergo evaluation by their Quality Control and Quality Assurance departments as well as outside testing organizations. They know that allergies are on the rise, and they remain vigilant and will revise their formulas, and will rule-out ingredients as knowledge in the area advances. Clearly, anyone with severe allergies or contact sensitivities with unknown causes should contact their physician to see if a skin test is recommended before using any of their products when an ingredient may be of concern.

"It was suggested by several dermatologists that we start a company to make better products than were commercially available for people with sensitive skin."
From the founders Conrad Thompson and Ed Mansfield
PSI, the manufacturer of Vanicream was founded in 1975. In 1974 we were both pharmacists working in a local hospital. Neither of us had any thoughts of starting a manufacturing company. However, at that time we worked closely with dermatologists and understood the needs of their patients. Because of our extensive experience formulating products, it was suggested by several dermatologists that we start a company to make better products than were commercially available for people with sensitive skin. We investigated this idea and formed Pharmaceutical Specialties, Inc. (PSI) in 1975.
We developed PSI while continuing to work full-time at the hospital. Space was rented in a small building and a few part-time assistants were employed. As word spread about our products, business increased and we moved several times to larger facilities to accommodate our growth. We both retired from the hospital in the mid '90s to manage PSI on a full-time basis.
We are regularly inspected by the FDA and licensed by the Minnesota State Board of Pharmacy as a pharmaceutical manufacturer. Throughout the evolution of PSI, we have been extremely fortunate in obtaining and keeping employees who are dedicated, have great knowledge and skill, ambition, honesty, talent and loyalty. We consider the employees our "PSI family."
We are grateful for the support and loyalty we receive from physicians and pharmacists that recommend our products and the patients who benefit from them. It is our intention to continue to manufacture and develop new products in the same manner that we have in the past 35 years.
