Unbleached Totally Chlorine-Free (TCF) Paper
Wood pulp, in its natural state is brown or beige. Papers made from such pulp - for example brown paper bags, and most cardboard boxes - are also brown. For years, most paper was subjected to a bleaching process to make it white, using elemental chlorine (Cl), usually in the form of chlorine gas, with horrible environmental consequences.
Today, this process is no longer used in most of Europe. Much of the North American pulp and paper industry no longer uses elemental chlorine (Cl), but there remain a number of paper mills in North America which continue to do so, despite the documented environmental damage that this process engenders. Today, the most common form of bleaching paper is no longer with the use of elemental chlorine (Cl), but instead with the use of chlorine derivatives, principally chlorine dioxide (ClO2). Paper bleached with chlorine dioxide is often referred to as "elementally chlorine-free" (ECF). Though bleaching with chlorine dioxide (ClO2) is far preferable to bleaching with elemental chlorine, it is still environmentally harmful, because chlorine derivatives still produce toxic chlorinated organic compounds, such as chloroform, a known carcinogen.
Totally chlorine-free (TCF) paper is paper which is either unbleached, or bleached using no chlorine or chlorine derivatives. Bleached papers which are totally chlorine-free (TCF) have been bleached with oxygen, ozone and/or hydrogen peroxide. These bleaching methods have none of the environmental impacts of chlorine chemistry.
About If you Care
If You Care was conceived of as a brand of environmentally friendly kitchen and household products. The first If You Care products were unbleached coffee filters, and they were launched in 1990. These were the first unbleached coffee filters in the U.S. Parchment Baking Paper and Baking Cups soon followed. All of the paper products were unbleached and totally chlorine-free.
In 2004, the very first Aluminum Foil made from 100% recycled aluminum was launched. This product featured a 95% energy savings compared to conventional aluminum foil. Heavy Duty Aluminum Foil for grilling and barbecuing, also from 100% recycled aluminum, was introduced in 2007. That same year, waxed paper, from unbleached paper coated with soybean wax was launched. In 2009, two new products are being launched in the fourth quarter - 100% carbon neutral fire starters, made from FSC certified wood and vegetable oil, and sandwich and snack bags made from unbleached greaseproof paper. Many new products in a wide variety of categories are being planned and developed in the coming years. If You Care kitchen and household products are carefully and deliberately crafted to have the least environmental impact and the lightest carbon footprint possible, while at the same time, delivering to the consumer, the highest quality and most effective results.
If You Care products are produced with a view to reducing the amount of waste in their waste streams. If possible, nothing should remain after the product has been used and properly disposed of. The packaging of every product is made from unbleached and whenever possible, recycled cardboard or paper which should be recycled again. The coffee filters, parchment paper, baking cups, waxed paper and sandwich bags are 100% biodegradable and should be composted. The aluminum foil is made from recycled aluminum and can be recycled again.
